Monitoring and data transmission using fiber optic sensors and optical fiber in cabling is now commonplace in upstream production, downstream transport, and refining of crude oil and natural gas throughout the world. With hydrocarbon consumption outpacing discovery, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques are being deployed worldwide to increase the recoverable assets in known reservoirs. The fastest growing EOR technique is Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). SAGD requires monitoring the input of energy (steam) to enhance recovery of heavy oil without causing a breakthrough of steam from the injector well to the producing well. This is best done with a fiber optic Distributed Temperature Sensor (DTS) inserted into the producing well.
DTS utilizes optical fiber for temperature profiling the extremely harsh environment of SAGD and conventional wells. Verrillon has developed optical fiber specifically for this environment that resists the environmental effects of today’s oil wells. This fiber is the result of custom glass chemistry, best in class hermitic carbon coating, and high temperature polyimide and acrylate coatings. This fiber is available in standard buffering, encased in continuous stainless steel or inconel tubing (FIMT), or up-buffered to standard cabling and cap-tube configurations. Verrillon optical fiber and cabling increases sensor lifetime and decreases operational costs in oil fields throughout the world every day.
Verrillon is the dominant supplier to the down hole fiber optic sensing equipment field with over 100 km (we have shipped over a million meters of fiber into oil and gas related applications) of fiber in service with the worlds largest oil field service providers and sensor manufacturers. With products that range from near-cryogenic temperatures to 300°C, Verrillon can supply your harsh environment needs for down hole sensing, pipeline monitoring and process control.
